Kathy Keating
Hi! My name is Kathy Keating, and I’m an American who lived in the Netherlands for nearly seven years. If you’re reading this, then chances are good that you’re either related to me or know me personally. If not, then please let me take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself.
I grew up in a small town in northern New York and led a pretty sheltered life until my early adulthood. After college, I worked first as a newspaper reporter and later as a public relations manager and spokesperson for a small college New York. I married my amazing husband, Jim, in September 2002, and after a quick honeymoon to the Caribbean, we moved to Amsterdam that October.
Although it was often really challenging for me, Amsterdam is a phenomenal place, and I know I’m incredibly lucky to have had this experience! I’ve been able to live in a different culture from my own and travel around the world too. I feel like I’ve been able to grow as a person in ways I might never have done somewhere else.
Amsterdam is a special place to me, and I highly recommend visiting, if you have the chance. Hopefully, you’ll find some interesting tidbits about living here and traveling – along with some mundane details about my life – through reading my blog. Thanks for visiting, and I hope you enjoy it!
*The photo above is one I took a few years ago of the Reguliersgracht, one of my favorite canals in Amsterdam. I love the photo because I feel it really captures a little of the essence of the city (and my old neighborhood).

Kathy,
I’m thinking about moving to Amsterdam myself, and I happened to run into your blog. I’m from Texas, and last summer I visited Europe and fell in love with Amsterdam.
I’m currently in veterinary school and will be graduating in May 2010. I’m pretty sure I need to learn Dutch to work as a vet in Amsterdam especially for the medical records.
I just have a couple questions for you. Was the move to Amsterdam easy? Did you learn Dutch after you moved there? Are the dutch people friendly to new people who move there?
Hi Allison,
Thanks for visiting my blog! The move wasn’t easy, because I don’t think any international move is, but the culture isn’t THAT different from our own, so it wasn’t too difficult either. It just takes time to adjust. I’ll send you an email with more info and answers to your other questions. Thanks again for visiting!
